In the war on trolls and fake accounts, Twitter is deleting one million accounts a day, and has wiped 70 million since May. It has issued warnings that users will probably see a reduction in their number of followers. The vigorous attempts to clean house shows a shift of focus at Twitter. It previously championed free speech above all else. Del Harvey, VP for trust and safety, said “Free expression doesn’t really mean much if people don’t feel safe.” How many accounts are fake is difficult to estimate; Twitter reckons it at five percent, other studies put it at 15 percent or more. It is expected that Twitter’s numbers will flatten out of even decline for the second quarter.
